blu ray

Blu-Ray disc, like HD DVD, is also a high-definition optical disc format that can store digital media such as high definition videos. Blu-Ray got its name from the blue-violet laser that is used to read and write data to the optical disc contrary to the old red lasers used in standard DVD.

The blue-violet laser’s wavelength is shorter (405 nm) than the red laser (650 nm) which, enables Blu-Ray to store more data on a disc with the same physical size as that of a standard DVD. This enables Blu-Ray disc to store high definition formats of 720p, 1080i or 1080p and 7.1 channel surround audio formats.

The difference of Blu-Ray disc with HD DVD disc is that it can hold more data. An 8 cm single sided HD DVD can hold 4.7 Gigabytes of data while a Blu-Ray disc with the same dimension can hold 7.8 gigabytes of data. With this, Blu-Ray disc are more expensive than HD DVD.

sony-ux1

I may be a bit late to the party on this, but I’ve just come across Sony’s new VGN-UX1XN Ultra portable PC. What can I say - I want one! It’s similar in concept to the oqo line, but Sony have upped the spec considerably.

For your £2000 ($4000 - yikes!) you get:

4.5in, 1024 x 600 widescreen
1.3Ghz Intel Core solo CPU
1GB RAM
32GB flash memory storage
Bluetooth, Wifi, USB and 2 cameras (front/back)
Windows Vista
A slide out backlit keyboard
The flash storage is cool, but the screen and CPU are the things that stand out for me. With that resolution and chip this might be a UMPC that’s actually usable in real world day to day life. Unfortunately with that price tag most of us are never going to get the chance to try. Sob.

Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder

For those of us gadgetheads who have long lived in peaceful co-existence with our Internet connections, we have sometimes become so attached to it that we tend to check our e-mail every 5 minutes only to find nothing but spam on physical enlargement programs and financial schemes. This is possible if you have an EV-DO connection, but the poorer folk who cannot afford the exorbitant monthly fee, they will just have to settle for free WiFi that is generously provided by Starbucks and other commercial establishments. If you ever need to find that crucial WiFi hotspot, there is no better device to do so than the Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder.

The Wireless-G USB Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder is a pocket sized device that is capable of sniffing out any WiFi spots the moment you activate it. Best part is, you don’t even need to hook it up to any USB port before doing so, making this the perfect out-of-pocket solution. Of course, letting you know whether there is a WiFi hotspot or not is one thing, it is also impressive to know that the Wireless-G USB Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder is also capable of displaying important information such as the wireless network’s name (SSID), signal strength, the channel used, and whether wireless security is enabled or not on an LCD display.

Interested parties will be able to pick it up for $79 a pop. No longer do you need to search high and low for a WiFi hotspot with the Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder. Bear in mind the readouts received will only cater for Wireless G or B networks, so those who are ahead of the crowd with draft-N networks will have to sit out on this one.

Two sim cards in one cell phone

Are you one of those people that use a few cell phones at ones? You know those busy ladies and gentleman who must have one cell for work, and one for personal conversations! Well, we think there might have been developed an answer to your prayers. Even thought the new phone that’s going to make you extremely delightful is currently on sale only in Asia, it is still nice to know that there is now a phone that can be incredibly useful to all the "multi-talkers" out there!

A new Doubao 728 cell phone from China can hold two different SIM cards at the same time! Even thought this won’t help you in having two conversations simultaneously (in this case only cloning seems to be the answer), but it will at least solve the problem of utilizing two different handsets! In addition to this magnificent feature this new miracle phone has all the traditional features to satisfy the most conventional user. In addition to the two-SIM card option, a cell phone user will receive a 0.3 mega pixel camera, a micro SD card slot and a 2.2" QVGA touch screen. So, guess if you are lucky enough to live in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to get your hands on this cell - then you should hurry to enjoy all the unique benefits!

flying car

If you hate being stuck in traffic jams, don’t worry, because the new flying car PAL-V is on it way. This Dutch project is a hybrid 3-wheel vehicle that can fly as a gyrocopter and also be driven as a regular car, or to be more precise, like a motorcycle.

When riding on the road, the PAL-V will use the patented technology Dynamic Vehicle Control (DVC™), originally designed for the Carver One, that should make tilting in corners a piece of cake. The flying apparatus is based on the original idea for the “autogiro”, developed in 1923 by Juan de la Cierva, and will have the capability to land practically anywhere. Combining the best of both worlds, the PAL-V ONE will use a foldable rotor fixed on the roof, a foldable propeller, and a slidable tail. The motor used for driving is the same that will power the propeller. The same controls are used in both flying and driving mode, but with different functionalities between them.

The PAL-V will fly only under 4,000 feet and will use a highly fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engine that can run on petrol, but also on biodiesel or bio-ethanol. The vehicle will reach up to 200 km/h both on land an in the air.
Flying and riding with the PAL-V will be a breeze, and I can’t wait to get my hands on one of those

dragon I

Take a look at this picture. Is that a modern art sculpture, an octopus, or maybe even a vase of flowers? No, that’s the Dragon I, a new sound system with an integrated iPod dock and a design that’s clever and original. Each of the “tentacles” is actually an independent speaker with 5 watts in a total power of 20 watts.

The speakers can be bent as you wish, making it bizarre and great looking at the same time. Created by Smart Design, this strange looking iPod dock comes with a remote control and can also be used with other MP3 players. The external connectors by the side of the iPod could have been more cleverly hidden, but that’s ok, I still want one of those in my living room.

The Dragon I will cost 249 €, and it should be on sale by April.

wi-spy

I’m not a whiz at wireless networks, and when mine started acting up a few days ago, it was pretty annoying to fix it. I tried resetting it, changing some settings (that only made it worse), changing IP addresses and odd dances. In the end, I never actually fixed it. I merely swapped the router with another one I had lying around, and fortunately that worked for me. Now, the Wi-Spy Spectrum Analyzer might not have fixed my problem specifically, but it could’ve and I’m sure it can fix other people’s problems.

Size is that of your standard USB key. It’s a 2.4 Ghz spectrum analyzer that was designed specifically for troubleshooting and analyzing wi-fi networks. With the software, you’ll see signal strength of all wi-fi networks, bluetooth, microwaves (hmm), 2.4ghz cordless phones, and a Zigbee. . . The software also helps you decide which channel to broadcast your network on. You can observe how busy specific channels are, making it easy to pick a nice quiet one. Because it also picks up phones and other things, you can also see if your poor signal is the result of interference. I know I switched to 5.4ghz or so phones awhile ago for that very reason.

At $100, you might not want to rush out and buy this thing, as it may or may not solve your problems, but if you’re a person who does a lot of support work with networks, the Wi-Spy Spectrum Analyzer looks quite helpful. And as a bonus, the software works on Windows, Mac OS X, and even Linux.

prison pen

After watching too many Hollywood productions, I am convinced that prison inmates would do anything and use everything in their power to plan an escape, and even the humble pen is not spared as it can be improvised into a life threatening weapon. This is one of the reasons why inmates are checked thoroughly before entering a prison in order to prevent a riot. The Prison Pen brings a new twist to the humble writing instrument that everybody knows and loves - it is not only capable of helping you in putting down your John Hancock, it also doubles up as a useless weapon in the event some pea-brained inmate tries to plot a hostage situation.

The Prison Pen does not come with a plastic or metal enclosure that you normally find in normal pens, as it is encased in a soft, rubbery material instead. You won’t be able to stab anyone with the Prison Pen since it will bend even under the slightest pressure. The manufacturers managed to achieve the perfect balance between a workable writing instrument and a non-lethal weapon, making this the perfect writing instrument to be used in interview rooms, holding cells, as well as any other prison environments.

The Prison Pen is currently available from SpyCatcher for approximately $10 each. They’re pretty pricey for the average wage earner, but I suppose the layman isn’t the target market in the first place. It is said that the Prison Pen is now in use across most U.S. Federal Prisons. Even though the Prison Pen contains a pretty small ink tank, it is still capable of writing over 1000 metres before a refill is needed.

miniature steam engine

I’ve not seen one of these in ages, a fully working minature steam engine (and I’ve never seen a model engine with so much shiny brass).

The classic Locomobile is works like a real steam engine but is 1/8 the size. You fill the boiler with water, light a dry spirit tablet and when the boiler is hot enough the steam powers the engine (and the all important whistle).

This is one of those toys that as well as being fun and educational is also a pretty good investment IMO (though bear in mind I have a shed full of 2000 AD comics that I thought would be worth something one day (Sylvestor Stallone (Judge Dredd) has a lot to answer for)). You can get the Classic Working Steam Engine Locomobile for $549.95

Acer CP-8660 retro digital camera

Acer CP-8660 retro digital camera
Another retro-styled digital camera to consider, the Acer CP-8660 having one thing going for it against the competition - it's much cheaper.

Apart from its retro styling, the CP-8660 is an 8.28 megapixel digital camera with a 2.8-inch TFT screen, along with 6x optical zoom, 17 preset shooting modes, 25MB of internal memory (which can be increased with SD storage cards), video recording, built in editing tools, voice memo and a rechargeable battery. It also features anti-shake technology to compensate for any unsteady hands.

It's not up there for looks with the Leica D-Lux 2 or the Samsung L85, but you'll not get either of those for the Acer's asking price of £116.

music sofa

Space age Music Sofa

A while back, we featured the Sonic Chair, a modern-day take on Eero Aarnio's Ball Chair with built-in speakers. And now, along similar lines, comes the Music Sofa.

Designed by Giongkun Wuqiongkun, it's actually a chair more than a sofa, but has a superb space age design that would fit effortlessly into your 70s-style pad. But this is no ordinary chair - it has a built-in CD player and built-in speakers for your tunes. And it's got a wireless connection, so you can stream music from around the house.

Clever stuff, but still a prototype right now, with production likely later this year.
