blu ray

Blu-Ray disc, like HD DVD, is also a high-definition optical disc format that can store digital media such as high definition videos. Blu-Ray got its name from the blue-violet laser that is used to read and write data to the optical disc contrary to the old red lasers used in standard DVD.

The blue-violet laser’s wavelength is shorter (405 nm) than the red laser (650 nm) which, enables Blu-Ray to store more data on a disc with the same physical size as that of a standard DVD. This enables Blu-Ray disc to store high definition formats of 720p, 1080i or 1080p and 7.1 channel surround audio formats.

The difference of Blu-Ray disc with HD DVD disc is that it can hold more data. An 8 cm single sided HD DVD can hold 4.7 Gigabytes of data while a Blu-Ray disc with the same dimension can hold 7.8 gigabytes of data. With this, Blu-Ray disc are more expensive than HD DVD.
