blu ray

Blu-Ray disc, like HD DVD, is also a high-definition optical disc format that can store digital media such as high definition videos. Blu-Ray got its name from the blue-violet laser that is used to read and write data to the optical disc contrary to the old red lasers used in standard DVD.

The blue-violet laser’s wavelength is shorter (405 nm) than the red laser (650 nm) which, enables Blu-Ray to store more data on a disc with the same physical size as that of a standard DVD. This enables Blu-Ray disc to store high definition formats of 720p, 1080i or 1080p and 7.1 channel surround audio formats.

The difference of Blu-Ray disc with HD DVD disc is that it can hold more data. An 8 cm single sided HD DVD can hold 4.7 Gigabytes of data while a Blu-Ray disc with the same dimension can hold 7.8 gigabytes of data. With this, Blu-Ray disc are more expensive than HD DVD.

sony-ux1

I may be a bit late to the party on this, but I’ve just come across Sony’s new VGN-UX1XN Ultra portable PC. What can I say - I want one! It’s similar in concept to the oqo line, but Sony have upped the spec considerably.

For your £2000 ($4000 - yikes!) you get:

4.5in, 1024 x 600 widescreen
1.3Ghz Intel Core solo CPU
1GB RAM
32GB flash memory storage
Bluetooth, Wifi, USB and 2 cameras (front/back)
Windows Vista
A slide out backlit keyboard
The flash storage is cool, but the screen and CPU are the things that stand out for me. With that resolution and chip this might be a UMPC that’s actually usable in real world day to day life. Unfortunately with that price tag most of us are never going to get the chance to try. Sob.

Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder

For those of us gadgetheads who have long lived in peaceful co-existence with our Internet connections, we have sometimes become so attached to it that we tend to check our e-mail every 5 minutes only to find nothing but spam on physical enlargement programs and financial schemes. This is possible if you have an EV-DO connection, but the poorer folk who cannot afford the exorbitant monthly fee, they will just have to settle for free WiFi that is generously provided by Starbucks and other commercial establishments. If you ever need to find that crucial WiFi hotspot, there is no better device to do so than the Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder.

The Wireless-G USB Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder is a pocket sized device that is capable of sniffing out any WiFi spots the moment you activate it. Best part is, you don’t even need to hook it up to any USB port before doing so, making this the perfect out-of-pocket solution. Of course, letting you know whether there is a WiFi hotspot or not is one thing, it is also impressive to know that the Wireless-G USB Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder is also capable of displaying important information such as the wireless network’s name (SSID), signal strength, the channel used, and whether wireless security is enabled or not on an LCD display.

Interested parties will be able to pick it up for $79 a pop. No longer do you need to search high and low for a WiFi hotspot with the Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Wi-Fi Finder. Bear in mind the readouts received will only cater for Wireless G or B networks, so those who are ahead of the crowd with draft-N networks will have to sit out on this one.
